This collection was assembled by Allen Forte for his personal use. He began collecting these items in the early 1950's, and acquisition continued over some two decades. The collection was offered for sale as a whole in the spring of 1998, and was acquired by the library in August of that year.

From the Allen Forte Papers at Yale University: Allen Forte (1926-2014) was the Battell Professor Emeritus of the Theory of Music at Yale University. He was a specialist in 20th-century atonal music, musical analysis using Schenkerian methods, and the American popular ballad.
